Manage Your Website with cPanel

Your web host will give you an internet address where you can login to manage your website. The interface or dashboard that you will use is called ‘cPanel.’ CPanel is your website management program; it is like the toolbox for your website. It allows you to view traffic reports of your website, set up your email accounts, backup your files, etc. You will need to use cPanel occasionally, so you should be comfortable with it.

Many people are afraid to use cPanel, due to a fear of the unknown. When working in cPanel, you are working on a distant server that is shared with other websites, and operated by unknown engineers and geeky technicians. That can feel scary. However, the web host staff knows better than to give you the ability to screw up their servers. So if you are careless, you can possibly wipe out your website that is inside your one folder on the server, but probably no more than that. And, that is why you want to learn how to use cPanel.

The little (silent) videos within cPanel might help you, but they are not very thorough at all. Therefore, I wanted to suggest this book on cPanel as a desk reference. Several cPanel books that I reviewed were too basic and had too much information about the shopping cart programs that come with cPanel that most people do not use, and not enough about cPanel itself. The ‘cPanel User Guide and Tutorial’ is a complete reference for all levels of understanding. You will not outgrow this book and it will not be over your head.
